The History of Toyota
On August 28, 1937, Kiichiro Toyoda founded the Toyota Motor Corporation. Throughout the years, Toyota became a huge automotive manufacturer in Japan, which led to its international expansion. On October 31, 1957, Toyota Motor Sales was brought to the United States, establishing its headquarters in Hollywood, California. Toyota struggled during the early years of its American years as some of their vehicles were considered underpowered and overpriced. The Land Cruiser did much of the heavylifting sales wise for Toyota as it quickly gained a reputation for being durable and having all-terrain capabilities. Toyota continued to ride this reputation of producing quality and reliable vehicles, so they geared their production towards that in order to appeal to the American audience. By July 1967, Toyota had become the third best selling import brand in the United States. In 1972, Toyota sold its one-millionth vehicle and surpassed Volkswagen as the number one import brand in the United States by 1975. In 1986, Toyota debuted their first vehicle built on American soil, a Corolla. Ever since, Toyota has built many more factories and plants in America, 14 in total by the end of 2011. Toyota has continued to have a large presence in the American automotive industry due to its reliability and longevity in their vehicles!
Toyota's Past Models
Throughout the years, Toyota has had built millions of vehicles. Some vehicles have withstood the test of time, but others have been discontinued for a variety of reasons. Here are some of Toyota's best past models:
Toyota Celica
The Toyota Celica was first introduced in 1970. The Celica went through many generations, varying in type from convertible to lifeback to coupe. After seven strong generations of market production, the Celica's US production was discontinued in 2004 due to low sales.
Toyota ECHO
In 2000, the Toyota ECHO became available. It was available as both a coupe and a sedan and it got an estimated 38 MPG combined, making it a viable option those who needed to travel frequently. The ECHO came to an end in 2005 due to low sales since it was too small for a reasonable sedan and less practical than a hatchback.
Toyota Matrix
In 2003, Toyota released the hatchback known as the Matrix. It was a sportier version of the Corolla and had versions with either front-wheel or four-wheel drive. The five-door hatchback lasted until 2013 in the United States until it was discontinued due to declining sales.
