Hyundai's History

On December 29, 1967, Chung Ju-Yung founded the Hyundai Motor Company. Operating out of Seoul, South Korea, Hyundai moved to the United States in 1985 and established in Garden Grove, California. The first vehicle exported to the US market was the Hyundai Excel in 1986. Two years later, Hyundai opened up two parts distribution centers, one in Ontario, California and one in Aurora, Illinois. In 1990, Hyundai opened up its North American headquarters in Fountain Valley, California. Hyundai then became the first automaker to provide buyers with regularly scheduled maintenance on top of a standard warranty at no additional cost in 1991, giving customers an extra incentive to buy from them. They continued to grow and innovate over the years rising 49 points in the J.D. Power Initial QualitySurvey in 1996. As Hyundai began to grow, so did their sales. In 1999 Hyundai saw an 82 percent sales increase over the prior year, the industry's largest jump ever. They passed Mazda to become the number 5 selling Asian brand in the United States the following year. In 2005, Hyundai celebrated the grand opening of the Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama, marking the beginning of the production of vehicles in the United States. Hyundai's continued growth in the USA led to an investment of $150 million in the construction of a new North American headquarters in 2011. Today, Hyundai is still a top-tier car manufacturer, winning many awards along the way.
