The History of Honda

In 1948, the Honda Motor Company was formally established by Soichiro Honda and Takeo Fujisawa, first making motorcycles. Honda didn't reach the United States until June 11, 1959, when the first overseas subsidiary of Honda was established in Los Angeles, California. In less than a decade, Honda perfected motorcycle design and engineering, leading them to sell their millionth motorcycle in 1968. In the year 1969, Honda sold their first automobile in the United States, the Honda N600. In 1974, Honda met the cry of "Blue skies for our children" by engineering a CVCC engine that made the Honda Civic the first vehicle to meet the strict emissions standards of the new US Clean Air Act. In 1978, the Honda Accord was released, marking the beginning of the best-selling passenger car in America, selling over 12.5 million in the country. In December of 1999, the Honda Insight is released, the first hybrid vehicle available in North America. In 2014, the 10 millionth Honda Accord is built in North America and celebrates a total US production of 20 million Honda and Acura vehicles. Honda is still thriving today with many of its automobiles being awarded accolades such as Car of the Year and Truck of the Year in North America.

Hondas of the Past

Since the beginning of Honda, they have released a wide variety of vehicles that have hit the open roads. Many are still available today, but some are no longer here due to certain reasons. Here are some of the best Hondas of the past:

Honda CR-Z

Honda CR-Z

In 2011, Honda introduced the CR-Z, a combination of a hybrid vehicle and a sports car. Its compact size and strong handling made it a solid choice from Honda, but it never quite lived up to performance expectations and it caused sales to drop. After 5 years, the CR-Z was discontinued in 2016.

Honda Element

Honda Element

In 2008, Honda released the Element, a compact crossover SUV. One of Honda's more versatile vehicles, it was overshadowed by Honda's CR-Vs. This is because the Element was a niche vehicle meant more for hikers and dog lovers while most consumers wanted a smaller SUV. This led to the Element being discontinued in 2011.

Honda S2000

Honda S2000

In 1999, the Honda S2000 was released. It was an open-top sports car that ended up being very desirable due to its small production numbers and Honda's reputation for making dependable cars. This made the S2000 a bit more expensive and in 2009, it was discontinued due to slow sales.
